Gabrielle's Cauldron FEATURED TODAY

Gabrielle's ButtonGabrielle’s Cauldron

By Ann Gimpel

Publisher: Liquid Silver Books

ISBN: 978-1-93176-119-2

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Gabrielle McCallaghan just lost her job. Seeing the writing on the wall, she quit to spare her uncle the embarrassment of having to fire her. With her bond fairy on her shoulder, she strides through a crowded neighborhood contemplating her options.

Out of nowhere, a gorgeous, full blood magic wielder appears and makes a beeline right for her. Gabby knows her hybrid witch magic is no match for his, so she tries to evade him. The fairy does her best to help, but the contest is laughable. Even in his human form, the wolf-man is still stronger than she ever dreamed of being.

It doesn’t take long before Gabby is drawn into a deadly game of intrigue that started over a thousand years before. The stakes are high and the timing abysmal, but she finds herself falling in love in spite of herself. Can she and her full blood lover make a life for themselves? Or will the long-running battle between full bloods and hybrids pound the fragile bond between them to dust?

About the Author

Ann Gimpel is a clinical psychologist, with a Jungian bent.  Avocations include mountaineering, skiing, wilderness photography and, of course, writing.  A lifelong aficionado of the unusual, she began writing speculative fiction a few years ago. Since then her short fiction has appeared in a number of webzines and anthologies. Two novels, Psyche’s Prophecy, and its sequel, Psyche’s Search, have been published by Gypsy Shadow Publishing, a small press. Excerpt:

Gabrielle shook her head. She was shocked at how eager she was to be free of Brad and this office. Now that the possibility of independence sat there, beckoning to her, she couldn’t resist. “Thanks, Uncle Brad. You’ve been more than kind to me.”

He cleared his throat. “Well,” he said, voice surprisingly gentle, “keep in touch. If you stop by tomorrow, I’ll have your check for this last week.”

Gabrielle knew how little she’d done. “That’s okay. I’ll just grab my things and be out of your hair. I—” but she didn’t know what else to say. Suddenly uncomfortable, she turned away from her uncle and went to clear her few possessions out of her desk. After inadvertently slamming her long, dark hair in a desk drawer, she pulled it into an untidy pony tail. Ten minutes later, she let herself out the swinging glass door adorned with BRAD MCCALLAGHAN, CPA, in faded, dark blue letters.

“That wasn’t very smart,” she muttered to the pixie sitting on her shoulder. “What am I going to do now?”

Doesn’t matter, I’m free.

“No, we’re free,” Amalia corrected. The pixie was clearly in mind-reading mode. “It hasn’t been any fun at all being your bond fairy ever since you took that job. All you’ve done is grump around, hating life.”

Gabrielle stared balefully at the pixie. “You need to keep your opinions to yourself.”

“Why?” Amalia crossed one leg over the other. The foot that dangled beat a tattoo against Gabby’s breast.

“Never mind.” Knowing it would be wasted breath to try to get the pixie to do anything but what she wanted, Gabrielle sucked in crisp autumn air and walked toward the bus stop. It felt good to be outside. Not living a lie anymore was a big relief. She’d struggled with guilt for months about her antipathy for Microsoft Excel, Turbo Tax and Tax Cut. At least that part was over.

Strangers swirled around her. Seattle’s Capitol Hill was always full of people. Gabrielle looked longingly at a Starbuck’s sign, but three dollar coffees weren’t part of her new austerity plan. Actually, neither was the bus. What she needed to do was walk home. She had the time. And lower Queen Anne Hill wasn’t all that far away. She could be home in an hour.

What a joke. I have nothing but time now. Maybe if I walked more, I could get rid of some of this blubber. She tugged at the too-tight waistband of her too-short dark green skirt. Sitting eight hours a day hadn’t improved her figure at all. Gabrielle knew her height masked extra pounds; she also knew she’d gained a good ten since she started working for her uncle.

“Don’t stare,” Amalia hissed, sea-blue eyes wide with apprehension, “but that looks like trouble.” The pixie always reverted to mind speech when she felt threatened. Good thing too. Her constant dialogue had gotten Gabrielle into trouble more than once when someone had assumed she was the source of some smartass comment or other. Not all humans could hear pixies. It depended how much magic they had. The problem was when a person had no idea they had magic, but had been blessed—or cursed—with just enough to hear fairy chatter. Those folk were the ones who’d ended up in asylums a hundred years ago. Now doctors just crammed them full of mind-numbing drugs.

Gabrielle’s head snapped up. A hunk of a man who radiated power—wore it like an aura that screamed how much clout he had—strode down the opposite side of the street as if he owned the world. Coppery hair fell nearly to his waist. Well past six feet, he was dressed like a pirate in a cream-colored shirt with full, old-fashioned sleeves, a dark brown leather vest, and tight-fitting, black leather pants that left very little to the imagination. Knee-high boots of buff-colored suede fit over the pants. Apparently feeling her gaze on him, he slowed, head turning from side to side. Gabrielle could have sworn he was scenting the air like a dog.

“What is he?” Gabby sent. “I know he’s a full blood, but what kind?” Because pixies were entirely magical just like the full bloods, they were often quicker on the uptake. Gabby was a hybrid and her human blood often got in the way.

“Warg. He can see me, Gabby. Do something.” Amalia’s nails dug into her shoulder.

The pixie’s words had barely registered when a wolfish amber gaze settled on Gabrielle, boring into her. Heart racing, she ducked into the first shop she saw.

“Are you all right, miss?” A shopkeeper hurried over. Dyed red hair spiked in curls that fell past her shoulders. Sharp, green eyes took in Gabby and her off-the-rack J.C. Penney’s clothes.

Gabrielle looked around and saw she’d entered a lingerie store, and a pricey one at that judging from the tags hanging off flimsy bits of silk. She tried to quiet her breathing. “Yes. Just thought I’d, uh, look around a bit. I have a friend who’s, ah, getting married.” She offered up what she hoped was a convincing smile, reinforced by the tiniest leave me alone spell. The last thing she needed was for the salesclerk to boot her out of the store.

“There you are, darling.” A cultured baritone rang from the doorway. The voice had a definite German accent. “Nice of you to shop for something to entertain me.” The warg moved to her side and slid a hand under her elbow. A blast of sexual energy set Gabby’s nerves on fire. Her nipples pebbled instantly and her skin tingled with promise. Mostly so she wouldn’t throw herself into his arms, she took a step away and tried to settle her heart back into a normal rhythm. But the warg’s heat—and a delicious musky scent—followed her.

The shop girl’s eyes grew huge. She was practically salivating. Gabby could tell she was struggling to keep her gaze above the warg’s waist. “Welcome to my shop, sir,” she cooed. “We have things for men too.”

He raised a well-formed eyebrow. “Yes, dear. Your whole shop is actually for men.”

Romance Madness Blog Hop

January 25-29

I sometimes ask other authors, “Are you a paranormal author who adds romantic elements or a romance author who adds paranormal elements?”

If I was asked that question, I would say the latter. I’m a romance author who works with paranormal elements as a tool to create romances that are much more potent than they would be if limited to the foibles, fallacies, and fickleness of humans. If you’ve never tried love with a human plus, you don’t know what you’re missing!

TRRmfs2012 was my favorite year ever! My Familiar Stranger has elements of paranormal, fantasy and scifi, but it is first and foremost a romance which is why it is popular with romance fans who don’t normally read paranormal, fantasy, or scifi genres.

MFScover600x800Naturally, if I’m going to showcase a romance novel, ’twill be my own.

Smart. Sexy. Magical.

A secret society, modern day knights, an accidental pilgrim from an alternate dimension, and a vampire like no other come together where chance intersects romance for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure proving that true love can find you in the strangest places, even far, far from home.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAY…

Between the Bind: “This book was a ride!”

Books, Books, and More: “If I could write like this, I would never do anything else.”

Night Owl Reviews TOP PICK: “…a very complex book that is beautiful and heartwarming. There are numerous laugh out loud moments, as well as several nail biting edge of your seat moments. The adventure quotient is high, but not too much so. The romance in the novel is built in seamlessly, exquisitely enhancing the story.”

Coffee Addicted Writer. “I have read many vampire novels over the years, some good and some just plain awful. My Familiar Stranger is a breath of fresh air to the vampire genre that
has been done to death thanks to the overrated Twilight series. My Familiar Stranger has an original plot. I thought it was pure genius that the author would set the book in a parallel universe. The characters are all likeable and the dialogue is snappy.”

Booked and Loaded: “Created with a deft hand, each character is so well developed and defined that their voices are unique and specific, although their development is gradual, as befitting of plot and action. The rest of the story is just as well-crafted, almost to the point that you aren’t 100% certain that the world described is not just outside your door. The author has done a stellar job in creating the world, those who live within it, and a story-line that both compels you to read as you rush through to see just what happens next…”

The Paranormal Romance Guild: “This book is not the usual paranormal story that I am used to reading. It is way better. … There are many surprises and in this reviewer’s opinion this book had it all.”

Bitten by Paranormal Romance: “My Familiar Stranger was a wonderfully engrossing paranormal romance with just a dash of science fiction that grabbed me from page one and didn’t let go! Ms. Danann absolutely knows how to get a series going.”

Addicted to Reading: “Go sneak off to your reading nook, get comfy and get ready to dive into a new dimension with horrors, villains and true love that will keep the pages turning till the very end leaving you wanting more, but satisfied!”

Book Nympho: “Paranormal romance isn’t a genre I usually read but after reading the plot, I was intrigued by this book and decided to broaden my reading horizons and give it a try. I’m  so glad I did because I devoured the book in less than two days!”

DESCRIPTION…

Minutes ahead of inevitable assassination, Elora Laiken is forcibly transported to an alternate dimension similar, but not identical, to her own. She is stranded. Alone. Far from home. A stranger in a “strangish” land.

Of course a girl could suffer worse problems than having gorgeous suitors. Perhaps more importantly, in the midst of an epidemic of vampire related abductions, can she stay alive long enough to choose between an honor debt, true love, or the breathlessness of single-minded passion?

My Familiar Stranger is a full length, stand alone, Paranormal/Fantasy Romance novel that also sets up the foundation for the Black Swan series. It is loved by fans of romance, paranormal romance, fantasy romance, and urban fantasy.

Erotica quotient: 18+. Some steamy scenes. No menage. No BDSM.

EXCERPT:

Prelude

Medieval Faire

Plantersville, TX

Gabel watched carefully as the Festivities came to an end.  He’d worked hard tracking her down from city to city as the faire moved around.  He’d managed to get ahead of the faire and volunteer setting up and helping out the two weeks the faire was in town.  This gave Gabel the time he needed to get close to her to gain her trust.

The first time he’d seen her in Kansas City he’d realized that he had a mission; for the first time in so long, he’d been wallowing without a purpose and more than once he’d almost gave in to the urge to end it all; but he lacked the courage to carry out the deed.  Then God had brought him out of the depths of his wretched existence with a simple command…Kill Them….Kill the Evil Ones!

Gabel forced his self back to the present.

It sickened him to watch this last couple weeks as people flocked to her for a chance to have their Tarots read.  Most people where so stupid to the reality many thought it was simply a trick for their amusement.  Only he saw and knew the truth of the evil that grew inside her and the taint that poisoned her blood and if he didn’t stop her she would spread to infect others.  It was only a matter of time before the evil spread and took over her soul.  He could not allow it to happen and tonight he planned on freeing her cursed soul.

The sun was setting and he was making sure the visitors where leaving as the booths started packing up and getting ready to head out to the next city.

He approached her tent putting on his most handsome smile.  He’d made sure to play the part of the gentleman these last couple of weeks.  Slowing he had gained her trust; while at the same time keeping his distance so that she couldn’t get a reading off of him.   Oh, how it disgusted him to pretend to be nice to her when all he wanted to do to her was….

“Oh, there you are Lance I was hoping I’d see you tonight?”  Starla shouted waving him over to her tent.

Upon hearing her voice his thoughts trailed off trying to play his part of the Knight helping the faire maiden.  He walked towards her his true thoughts guarded.  “As I; hoped to see you my fair maiden.”  He bowed low in the manner befitting the knight he was dressed like still playing his part.

Starla smiled and blushed slightly making her cheeks match the redness of her hair.  Her brown eyes sparkled with mischief as she curtsied low in her peasant dress.  The blush spread across her creamy white skin.  “I wanted to thank you good Sir for being so kind and helpful to me these last weeks.”  She looked up through her thick lashes.  “May I repay your kindness with a reading?”  Starla raised back up smoothing her skirt out.

“I don’t really believe in that kind of stuff, no offence to you.”  He lied.

“Well if you’re not interested…”

Gabel cut Starla off.  “What could it hurt to give it a try?”  He gave her his most rakish smile.

“Wonderful.”  She sighed.  Starla motioned for him to come inside the tent and sit.   “Now have a seat.”  She smiled sweetly at him.  “Do you think you’ll be following the Faire to Galveston?”  She asked hope lacing her voice.  She wanted to get to know more about him she wasn’t sure why  but something about him seemed troubled in a way that made her want to sooth his pain.  She had a feeling that something terrible had happened in his life that kept him guarded when he was around others.  She hoped that the cards would let her see more into this complex man that sat before her.

“No.”  He stated flatly.

“Oh.”  She sighed trying not to sound too disappointed.  “I see this will be our last time then.  Let’s get started then shall we.”

“When ever you are ready place your hands over the deck and open your mind and seek what answer you would like to find.  Once you feel at peace then divide the deck into three piles.”  Starla instructed as she’d done many time through the years.  Many people had the talent of reading the Tarot cards but only a rare few could see beyond what the cards where saying and peer into the people’s lives.  She had always had the gift to do this by touching the cards after the people had it seemed that something from each person transferred to the cards leaving a small window into the soul.

Gabel did as he was instructed.  “There it is done.”  He said.

Starla took the cards into her hands and a sudden chill ran up her spine making the hairs on the back of her nape stand on end.  She tried to shake off the uneasy feeling telling herself that it was the chill of the evening air.  There was no other reason to feel this way she reassured herself.

Outside the tent the park lights kicked on as the setting sun sank behind the trees.  The other merchants had taken a break for the evening to sit down with their families for a quick dinner before finishing their job packing up.  Inside the tent Starla didn’t have that luxury; there was no family to share the time with or to share the lonely nights with.  Starla was all alone in the world and soon she’d be alone once more.

Starla took a deep breath centering her inner self as she turned the first card over in the reading.

“The Devil,” A slight quiver entered her voice involuntarily.  “In your recent past you where surrounded by negative forces and you seemed to be trapped in their clutches.  Your judgment has remained clouded by these past events.  An unpleasant event will turn into a new way of life for you.  You will feel overwhelmed in the amount of work it will take to achieve these new goals.  You will be working very hard for little or no profit.  You will stay in a depressed state of mind and will feel trapped in your obsession.  You have been run down because you feel like you no longer control your own life but you are a slave to your work your destiny.  You have trouble sleeping because your past and future are always on your mind. “As she flipped over the second card her hands where shuck slightly as the feeling of uneasiness grew inside.  “The Death Card represents your present state.  The relationship you had with a loved one came to horrible end though the love you feel will continue to burn like an eternal flame.  Though you didn’t think it was possible you will find a new path in your life that will be a release for you.  You will be unsettled and move around a lot trying to find some semblance of peace but no matter where you go the unhappiness will follow you and you will seek a way to ride yourself of these emotions and you will find that you can no longer go on as before and will find a new direction, focus, to throw yourself into you.  You will lose yourself and death will seem to follow you where ever you go.    You will find yourself all alone.”  Starla’s face turned pale as she turned over the last card in the reading.  “You’re Future The Death Card…”  Starla’s voice trailed off as all color drained from her face.  “That’s impossible.”  There was only one Death card in the deck it couldn’t possibly come up again and yet it did.

Gabel grabbed her hand forcing the palm of her hand to the card.  “Tell me what do you see?”  His voice lost all its charm and all the hate and resentment came to the surface reviling his true self.

Starla’s eyes rolled back in her head as images began to flash through her mind.  “DEATH!”

“And who’d death do you see?”  The contempt he felt for her kind laced his voice.

“Mine.”  Starla said so soft that it was barely audible.

“Then you can see there is no use screaming for help or tying to make a run for it.  After all it’s your destiny and you cannot cheat your fate!”  Gabel grabbed the hilt of his sword waiting for his moment.  Starla was too far into a trace to fight; she was his for the taking.

Only the white of her eyes showed as the horrible and shocking images that continued to race though her mind.  She was terrified of what she was seeing but unable to break the connection as she saw her own death and the death after death of other women yet to come.  Then for one moment her eyes began to come back into focus just in time to see silver slicing through the air out of the corner of her eye.  Then she knew no more.

Gabel watched as her head rolled on the tent floor.  Blood sprayed the ceiling and walls as her lifeless body feel from the chair to the floor.  He watched as the last spark of life faded from her brown eyes with profound satisfaction.
